The topic in Reception this term is 'Journey'. A big thank you to Ms Samuels' Dad who came to school last week to talk about being a Black Taxi Driver and brought his taxi along for the children to explore. He spoke about having to go to taxi school (The Knowledge) for 3 years and having to learn every road in London for when he has a journey. Copying the actions when reading a story in French helps children understand new language. Inspired by artists such as Andy Warhol and John Brunsdon, Year 5 have been extending their learning of the skill of printmaking in Art. The children explored reduction printing techniques and experimented with creating incisions on foam sheets. The results were really impressive, showcasing their creativity and attention to detail. All of Upper KS2 have been invited to a stadium tour at The Valley (@cafcofficial) and it was the turn of Avery (Year 6) last week. The children enjoyed a very informative tour of the stadium and learnt lots of historical facts about the stadium and the players. There were so many stalls and activities to choose from at the Christmas Fair on Friday, it was hard to decide what to visit first. Children were able to pre-book a visit with Father Christmas in the Grotto, choose from three different inflatable activities, face painting, henna painting, racing car simulator, bat-a-rat, gingerbread decorating, food and drink stalls and so much more! So many happy smiling faces, and that was just the adults! Stall holders, families and volunteers brought Christmas cheer to the Christmas Fair on Friday evening and helped make the event such a success. Year 6 went to the @imperialwarmuseums last week and had an amazing time! The children explored the WWI and WWII galleries and also took part in a documentary challenge. "The Documentary Challenge takes students out of the classroom and into IWM's galleries to explore objects and tell those stories in their own words. Briefed by Reena, a filmmaker for SMASH TV, students are given smart-cameras and tasked with making mini documentaries on the people and objects they feel the world needs to know about." The children consolidated their learning from their History/English lessons on WWII and worked really well in teams to create their documentaries. Year 3 enjoyed a recent trip to @creeksidediscoverycentre to take part in a Stone Age workshop. They leant how to survive in palaeolithic times by making dens out of natural resources, making fires to cook and keep warm and using leaves to make paint for cave art. . #eltham #se9 #greenwich #london

Six children from last year's gardening club went to the Guildhall in the City of London last week to attend the 80th anniversary prize giving of the London Children's Flower Society . We were awarded the Edith Hunter shield for the overall look of our Edible Garden which had been judge as gold standard when the inspector visited last summer. The award was presented by the TV presenter and president of the society, Alan Titchmarsh. Along with the shield, we also received a goodie bag containing a bird feeder, gift voucher and horticultural posters. Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 participated in a skateboarding/scootering workshop in school recently. They developed their skills of balance and core stability whilst learning how to push, turn, accelerate and stop.
