RHE
The spiritual and moral aspects of relationships within a context of Christian vision for the purpose of life.
Organisation of RHE
At Eltham Church of England Primary, Relationships and Health Education (RHE) is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally and socially. RHE is taught across the school from Year 1 – Year 6 on a weekly basis and as a school, we follow the Coram Life Education’s SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship) scheme of work enriched by the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study. Our RHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our RHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Christian Values:
resilience, forgiveness, understanding, love, respect and enthusiasm
Our RHE curriculum aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs to become happy and successful members of the school community. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.
Schools are required to comply with the Equality Act 2010. As a Church of England School we will build on our faith and outstanding relationships at our school to help create a constructive and supportive context for teaching Relationships Education.

EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage in Eltham Church of England, Relationships and Health Education is demonstrated through a holistic approach to personal, social, and emotional development. The curriculum focuses on fostering positive relationships, emotional well-being, and understanding basic health practices. Children engage in activities that promote self-awareness, communication skills, and empathy. Storytelling and discussions explore themes of emotions, friendships, and problem-solving. The curriculum encourages respect for diversity and inclusivity, introducing children to various family structures and cultures. Basic health education is integrated, covering topics like healthy eating, personal hygiene, and safety rules. Outdoor play and physical activities contribute to both physical development and social interaction. Circle time and group activities provide structured opportunities for discussions on relationships, emotions, and health, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment tailored to each child’s needs.
KS1
In KS1, Relationship and Health Education focuses on fostering personal, social, and emotional development. Children learn to identify and manage their feelings, build positive relationships, and understand diverse family structures. The curriculum introduces the concept of a healthy lifestyle, covering topics such as physical activity, nutrition, and personal hygiene. Basic safety education, including road safety and knowing how to seek help, is emphasized. These lessons are taught using a range of activities including research based lessons, role play, art, outdoor learning, local trips and more. Teachers have the flexibility to adapt the curriculum to meet the specific needs of their students while ensuring alignment with statutory requirements. Basic first aid education is included, teaching students essential life-saving skills and knowledge.
KS2
In Key Stage 2, the RHE curriculum focuses on further developing students’ understanding of personal, social, and emotional aspects, emphasising the importance of positive relationships, empathy, and respect. Topics related to physical and mental health are expanded, covering issues such as puberty, hygiene, mental well-being, and the impact of lifestyle choices on health. Students continue to explore the significance of online safety and are equipped with the skills to navigate digital spaces responsibly. The curriculum may include age-appropriate discussions on consent, relationships, and understanding the diverse nature of families and relationships. At Eltham the RHE teaching aims to empower students with the knowledge and skills necessary for healthy, respectful relationships, informed decision-making, and a positive approach to well-being in both the physical and digital realms.
Sex Education
Sex Education is also taught through years 1-6.
In KS1, the focus is very much on the ‘relationship’ part of the education and lessons are age appropriate. These focus on things such as:
- different types of relationships, including friendships, family relationships, dealing with strangers etc.
- identifying differences between male and female bodies
- hygiene
In KS2 lessons continue to be age appropriate and cover a range of topics such as,
- identifying differences between male and female bodies
- understanding the physical and emotional changes that happen during puberty
- hygiene
- exploring puberty, reproduction, conception and pregnancy
- communication within relationships (exploring consent)
Before the Sex Education lessons are taught in each year group, parents/carers will receive a letter outlining the upcoming lessons. The scheme of work, resources and outcomes for Sex Education are available for parents and carers to look through – please contact the school office to arrange a time to look at these with the headteacher. Furthermore, parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of our statutory RHE curriculum. If parents do request for their child to be withdrawn, it is good practice that a meeting between the parent and headteacher is held to discuss the request and clarify the nature and purpose of the curriculum.
The Scheme of Work and organisation of units continue to be adapted as we align our PSHE curriculum with the statutory guidance on Relationships Education and Health Education (September 2019). Parents are welcome and encouraged to speak to Mr Wills (Headteacher) about the scheme of work’s content and delivery as we work together to ensure our children are confident and have all the skills required to build healthy respectful relationships, focussing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. That they understand what it means to be physically and mentally healthy and have the capability to take care of themselves and receive support if problems arise.

Enrichment
Eltham Church of England Primary School places a strong emphasis on enriching Relationships and Health Education experiences, providing a comprehensive and holistic approach for its students. Through initiatives such as Bikeability, students in Year 5 not only learn crucial cycling skills but also cultivate a sense of responsibility and road safety awareness.
“Bikability was really fun and the instructors were amazing! I now feel comfortable and safe cycling on the roads.”
Tiago, Year 5
Cooking lessons contribute to their understanding of healthy lifestyles, teaching them practical skills for making nutritious choices. The school’s commitment to collective worship fosters a supportive and inclusive community spirit. Additionally, the Year 6 residential trip to Swanage serves as a unique opportunity for team-building and relationship development. Engaging in collaborative activities during the trip strengthens teamwork skills, reinforcing the importance of positive relationships both within the school and beyond. Eltham Church of England Primary’s approach to Relationships and Health Education enrichment reflects a dedication to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are equipped with essential life skills for their future endeavours.
